When I was growing up in a small town in southern New Hampshire, I had my mind set on becoming a geologist. As time went on, I realized that maybe I just liked all the pretty colors and textures of rocks instead of the science of it all. With that frame of mind out the window, I began to explore different career avenues and landed on graphic design.
In 2004 I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design from Plymouth State University and have spent a majority of my professional career in the newspaper industry.
As a quiet observer, I kept my art in the shadows for many years. It was just something I did in my free time. It wasn’t until someone said to me, “It’s not fully art unless you share it with the world.” And with that, little by little, I opened up my shell and started sharing my work at local arts and crafts shows and on social media.
As an artist, I like to keep an open mind to growth, so I enjoy using several different mediums. Naturally I focus a lot of my creative energies into digital illustration, but when I need a break from the blue light, I turn to traditional mediums such as acrylic paint, pen & ink and colored pencil.
In 2018, I developed what I call “prana planks.” Prana is the energy which flows in currents in and around the body and essentially into my work. The process of creating these pieces is very meditative and it’s easy to get lost in the intricate details. Each element organically builds upon itself to create a larger overall design.
The wood I use is from re-purposed scraps from a furniture factory that my husband used to work at, that otherwise would have been thrown away. I use acrylic paint as a solid base then overlay the hand drawn design using posca paint pens. Certain elements and color combinations may be the same, but each finished piece is one-of-a-kind.
